(Content Warning: Graphic Imagery) In this performance, Trotter sews over every scar on his body (including anything from top surgery scars to cat scratches to self-harm scars). This action addresses his experience with gender transition but reaches out more broadly across themes such as trauma, the thin line between attraction and repulsion, and the pain and necessity of transformation. It addresses the idea of the body as a vessel that records its own history. It also addresses gender transition as something more than a before and after photo timeline: a continuous practice of creating the self.

Theo Trotter is a New York-based artist whose work investigates the trans body as a palimpsest, through the marks of transformation and trauma that manifest on it. He works with a range of materials including textiles, paper, and latex.
