Honoring Peace Activist Hyun Lee
DATE & TIME
Saturday, September 24, 10:30am until complete
LOCATION
675 Hudson Street at 14th Street (Dos Caminos Restaurant)
In this visual art installation, Traci Molloy and Karen Oh will create a memorial chalk/pastel drawing in homage to the late Korean organizer and peace activist, Hyun Lee, who died in March 2022. Oh will assist with the drawing's design. Hyun Lee’s sole sibling, professional violinist Tina Lee Hadari, will be on location performing dirge music. The drawing, made with ephemeral materials, will slowly disappear, mimicking the way memories of lost loved ones shift and fade over time. Bits of pastel and charcoal will be disseminated throughout the city streets on the soles of passersby’s shoes, akin the way ashes are spread after cremation and how music lingers in the soul.
Traci Molloy, Karen Oh, and Mayele Alognon are Brooklyn-based artists/activists. Tina Hadari is a Connecticut-based musician/educator. In 2020, Molloy and Oh began generating large-scale pastel drawings in public spaces. Alognon joined Molloy and Oh in 2021. Their drawings provide space for people to process grief, enable healing, and talk about social justice.
